Stopping discrimination against children from Catholic primary schools

7/12/22 Dr Sara Thompson has been able to report some progress in overcoming the discrimination caused by the feeder school policy promoted by the Roman Catholic Church.  She would welcome any donations you can make towards her legal costs.

Nearly there!… Favourable developments. Please take part in the consultation, if you can, and fingers crossed.

The three secular Oadby Schools are now consulting on new Oversubscription Admission Criteria and this is the opportunity we fought for to ensure that St Thomas More children have access to Beauchamp, Gartree and Manor like all the other children in the area.

St Thomas More is currently only listed as a feeder to Catholic St Paul’s. But St Paul’s might not work for every single St Thomas More family.  We are fighting for choice.

St Thomas More children have no real chance to get into Beauchamp, Manor or Gartree, which are secular state schools.

After a 4 year “legal” battle, parents and carers now have a chance to ensure that St Thomas More children have a choice and a chance of access to some of the best schools in the area.

If you would like to take part in the consultation, please send an email to each school. Please see below email addresses and a suggested text that puts things in context.

Please forward this to other parents and in other groups. Thank you.

Beauchamp is proposing a return to distance criteria, which is simple and transparent. However, children in Knighton are now outside the catchment area. Please consider including Knighton and Clarendon Park in the catchment to give these children a chance.

Manor is proposing that Overdale and St John and Avenue remain as feeders, but not St Thomas More, even though these four schools are in the same area. This is not fair treatment. Please consider listing St Thomas More as there is no reason why it shouldn’t be a feeder if Avenue and St John and Overdale are.

Gartree is proposing that St John and Overdale remain as feeders, but not St Thomas More, even though these three schools are in the same area. This is not fair treatment. Please consider listing St Thomas More as there is no reason why it shouldn’t be a feeder if St John and Overdale are.

Consultation Summary:

VERY FAVOURABLE RESULTS!

Saint Thomas More (STM) primary school is currently only listed as a feeder to St Paul. This means that STM children have no real chance to get into Beauchamp, Manor or Gartree (some of the best schools in the area).

After a 4 year “legal” battle, parents and carers now have a chance to ensure that STM children have a choice and a chance.

Beauchamp - reverting back to the distance criteria (no longer feeder schools at all) - it means STM children have the same chances as all other children in the area.

Gartree - reducing the number of feeders (by 150 places) - it means that STM children will have an improved chance to get in.

Manor - they have not yet published their consultation but confirmed they will do so before Christmas.

This is our chance to ensure STM children have a choice and a chance of access to some of the best schools in the area.

SUNDAY 5th DECEMBER 2021
Dr Sara Thompson has initiated a legal challenge against the Catholic Diocese which objects to Saint Thomas More School (a Catholic primary school) being listed as a feeder school for any non-Catholic Secondary School. This restricts choice and means that children attending Saint Thomas More are being discriminated against in relation to other children in the area. Parental choice has been removed and the Diocese is making it, in practice, impossible for children attending this Catholic primary school - where a significant proportion of families is not Catholic - to have the same choices of secular community schools as other children in the area.
